This challenging piece by Sally Beamish is neither a comfortable listen nor a easy play. The piece is based on a brooding poem which takes you to a very dark place and not one you would immediately associate with the title. Beamish is one of Britain's leading composers and this is a high quality work which makes a bold statement addition to flute recital. Possibly a good idea to play something happy after it though!
