“For the serious ensemble.”
This a substantial work for a serious ensemble to get their teeth into. Technically demanding, there is no actual slow movement so a feeling of restless energy is always present. The overall style is a mixture of lush romantic harmonies and more angular writing with the flute always the star of the show. The opening flute cadenza is very French and leads into a charming first movement. The second movement has a real rhythmic vitality and a contrasting more lyrical central section. The closing Molto Vivace really motors along, giving all three players plenty of action. Not everyone will love this but it is certainly interesting and a great play!
