Bach rarely fails to please and this sparkling arrangement will have everyone smiling. The key of C major means the parts are easy on the eye so the challenge is keeping the ensemble tight. Each part has their own independent line which is great for teaching listening skills too. Using an alto will give a little more depth to the texture but this works very well with C flutes only. A lovely piece that would make a really upbeat start to a concert.
Unlike the other keyboard Toccatas, BWV 916 is clearly in 3 movements and the first movement is an ideal opener for concerts. It alternates ritornello and tutti sections, and this arrangement (not totally a transcription) works well for the flute ensemble. Although there are some passages that are not identical to the original, the harmonic profile of the original has been retained.
Key of the original is G major.
