"Summer Music" for flute (or violin) and guitar was written for an annual summer concert given at the Laurel Hill Mansion in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia in 1992. The Revolutionary War era setting inspired a piece that is generally pastoral in character and in a direct American style. The short prelude is followed by a dance with popular inflections and a contrasting trio section. The berceuse is a gently rocking lullaby. The piece concludes with a more extended movement in a concise sonata form.
