Long lyrical phrases with a more difficult middle section for the solo flute player.
Charles Marie Widor used the piece as incidental music to a stage play to depict 'Nuit faite pour qu'on aime ... attend le rossignol..' ( a night made for lovers ... waiting for the nightingale).
The flute duet version comprises the flute solo plus the accompaniment compressed into a single line for a second flute player. The accompaniment for piano is as composed by Widor.
