The melodies used in these 3 pieces are taken from Damase Arbaud’s collection, printed in 1862: “Chants populaires de la Provence”. This volume was part of a national collection, instigated by the French government, to ensure the survival of indigenous folksongs from all the regions of France. The selected tunes were arranged for my 2 nieces (flute & clarinet), and their mother (piano), in memory of their grandfather – who is especially commemorated in No.2. I hope players will have as much fun in playing them as I had in writing them!
