Best known for his wide range of church music, distinguished English composer Herbert Howells's work is characterised by a highly individual mix of modality and chromaticism, a refined sonority and resonant texture, and an often elegiac mood. Many of these features are evident in this Sonatina, one of his very few works for the piano.
