With this edition, Frank Michael created a small sensation when it was published. The title of the manuscript, which had remained hidden until then, also describes this piece as a trio, even if the present form with obbligato harpsichord is suspected to be a transcription. The Saxe-Weimar bandmaster Johann Ernst Bach (1722-1777) is artistically close to and in no way inferior to his second cousins, the Bach sons.
