Hindemith's sonatas belong in the repertoire of many instrumentalists. Since Hindemith wrote only one work for this instrumentation, the Small Chamber Music for Wind Quintet, it made sense to arrange one of his sonatas for it. In his arrangement of the sonata for clarinet in B flat and piano, Paul Leonard Schäffer keeps the solo part and distributes the piano accompaniment to the remaining instruments.
