How you enjoy this sonata will depend very much on whether or not you like the style of Gary Schocker, but this is undeniably a great addition to the alto repertoire. Approachable, playable but also challenging it fills a big gap and will undoubtedly prove very popular. The stand-out feature is the writing for high notes, especially in Above, and the 3rd movement, Burn, will improve articulation significantly. Breath control will be a feature of both Below and Float. If you need a repertoire piece for a decent alto player then this will fit the billl nicely.
Written for Michael Bowyer and Melvin Lauf, Jr. of the Potomack Flutes quartet, Sonata for a Lost Planet is a welcome addition to the alto flute repertoire from one of the flute world’s most revered and prolific composers. For advanced players. Dur: 7’
