Solitaire was commissioned by the National Flute Association for its 1995 Young Artists Competition, and its three movements present a variety of technical and interpretive challenges to the performer. The outer movements are fast, brilliant and aggressive in character, fulfilling the 'gaming' implications of the title. The slow second movement is lyric, reflective and melancholy.
