Disguised behind the name 'Sir Roger de Coverley' is an old Scottish dance, a spirited jig that normally seved as the last and most boisterous danc eof the traditional Christmas ball.
It begins, bizarrely, fragmentarily, with idiosyncratic harmonic progressions. Only over the course of the piece does it become clear that the angular, diminutive coponents of the theme are assembled like a puzzle.
Bridge spurs the cance on to an ever more effervescent livelness until Auld Lyng Syne is heard.
