Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin in 1923, but was forced to emigrate via Ecuador to New York in 1939 because of her Jewish descent. In 2006 she returned to the city where she was born. Sintra is a 'typical Mamlok': Created in 1969, this piece for alto flute and violoncello with a duration of only about seven minutes has been reduced to the essentials. Each note in this piece is important. The composition is a real challenge for the musicians and the possibilities of their instruments out of which they often coax unexpected sounds.
