This challenging wind quintet would be ideal for children's concerts as it has all the ingredients to hold and inspire a young audience. For a start, the Comedy Overture could stand alone. It evokes the slapstick humour of the clown with typical comic bassoon writing and busy parts for flute and oboe. Hilda Broods is a mysterious movement that highlights the difference between tune and accompaniment, as does Waltzing with Hilda. Clandestine Lovers uses only flute oboe and clarinet to vary the timbre and All's Well finishes things off in a sunny 4/4 12/8 dance. Also suitable for good student quintets, this is bound to find many uses and would be a good investment.
