“Interesting music.”
Elena Kats-Chernin writes fascinating music in a style that is a cross between minimalist and idiomatic. Although a twelve minute piece in one continuous movement there is plenty to keep your interest. Quirky harmonies, unusual rhythms and the use of instrumental colour change constantly, presenting challenges for all players. The brief, slower section is other-worldly providing a strange contrast amidst the general hustle and bustle of the work as a whole. Interesting to say the least!
The title refers to the writer Aurore Dupin (1804-1876) who, under the pseudonym of George Sand, ranks among the important self-confident and socio-critical women in 19th-century literature. Musicians have known her from her relationship of nine years with Chopin.
