Alfred Wernicke 1856 - 1931 was active as a flutist, composer and conductor. His flute compositions are largely lost. This makes the rediscovery of his Romance in D minor in this reprint edition all the more gratifying. Over a tasteful accompaniment he lets the flute sing a yearning, melancholy melody with the moving middle section making impressive use of all the flute's registers. After a capricious cadanza the flute returns to the opening theme and concludes this straightforward composition peacefully.
