Frank Michael dedicated this quartet to his composition teacher at the Frankfurt University of Music, Richard Rudolf Klein, on his 60th birthday. Quotations from Klein's virtuoso flute music permeate the last movement, and individual tones from it can be found as a nucleus in the entire serenade. The sentences, which can also be performed individually, are quite short and varied. It is a thoughtful and compelling work.
