This Quartet for 4 flutes in G Major by Fran ç ois Devienne (1759-1803) first published in Paris in Aulagnier, probably the composer's lifetime to 1800's. This new edition is based on this first print. Better to know this beautiful music as the first and probably best known of the 6 flute trios op. 19 (Edition Kossack 95100 and 95101), which are handed down in various contemporary editions. Difficult to say, whether the quartet or the trio is the real original.
In any case, we are dealing here with a real quartet consisting of four independent voices. The individual voices are not identical in detail with the corresponding voices of the trio, the 4th voice, which is ideally to occupy with a flute with H foot, goes original own ways and is not a mere filler voice based on the harmonics, to a 4. integrate voice. In the first voice of the first edition, a bar is missing in the first movement, which was then taken from the trilogue at the corresponding passage. The articulation was reconciled as usual and serves as a suggestion.
From the classical era, this quartet by Devienne is certainly one of the most beautiful and warmly recommended to any flute quartet.
