The Pastourelle is a free rondo, and Berg does not use bar lines, uinderlining the improvised nature of the work. But the score is tightly controlled, the long notes of the recurring principal theme are dominated by fourths, and the differentiated rhythmic exercises in the three episodes give scope to the range and diversity of the flute's expression.
