This is a winning combination of an unmistakeable Ivor Gurney melody and a skillful arrangement. The oboe takes centre stage supported by sparse textures that allow the star to shine. It really works and is a proven winner with audiences. Wonderful!
Ivor Gurney’s exquisite miniature, Nocturne in Ab, was originally composed for piano in 1908. Although primarily known for his songs, Gurney’s piano works are equally finely crafted and this Nocturne is no exception, packed with soaring melodies and beautiful chromatic turns. Arranged here for wind quintet this piece is a wonderful addition to the Romantic wind quintet repertoire, perfect for a moment of calm and repose in a programme.
