This is a lovely piece which is all about playing a bel canto lyrical line. The flute gently sings its way across all registers to invoke the Meditation and you will need great breath control to bring out the long phrases. The original scoring is unusual including vibraphone, harp and electric piano, and the piano reduction here manages to capture most of this wonderful colouring. If you have the resources to perform the chamber orchestra version this would be perfect for a college or university concert and it's great in this version too.
Carter Pann calls this work “an exploration in bel canto writing for an instrument I have been in love with since my first forays as a composer.” The result is a lusciously haunting and dreamy arioso that flirts with the familiar, yet reveals surprises at every turn. Equally beautiful with piano or with chamber orchestra, MY CROSS is a 9-minute work whose technical challenges lie primarily in breath control and in maintaining a sustained, beautiful tone throughout its long lines.
