There are lovely textures to be found in this approachable solo piece. Contemporary techniques and improvisation are used together with a simple motif and low alto colours to create a sensual aural journey. The technical challenges will be the familiar ones of using alternative fingerings, singing and playing etc rather than amazing finger work, although there is plenty of that too. The improvised cadenza allows complete freedom for the performer, which means that you can adapt it according the circumstances. Mimo works on every level and would make an excellent addition to any flute recital.
Mimo is a piece dedicated to my wife, flutist Cristina Ioan. It is a piece where the sensual dimension is explored expressively and the duality between pitch and noise is explored as a way of organizing the musical material. The piece evolves to a short improvisatory section that can be extended by the performer at will, functioning almost like a cadenza in the piece. Don't be afraid to explore the noisy moments in high registers. Just enjoy.
