Mechanical is an articulation and rhythmic workout for 3 advanced players. True to its title and in a minimalist style, it grabs the attention during its powerful 2 minutes duration. If you're lucky enough to have the unusual instrumentaion you're in for a treat!
Mechanical was written in 2008 for rarescale, who first performed the work in December the same year. Based on an earlier movement for violin and cello duo and lasting a little under 2 minutes, it is characterised by a motoric, repeating note figure (which provides ample challenges in articulation for the players), around which dance barely-glimpsed motivic fragments, before the music comes to a sudden, arbitrary halt.
