This quartet instantly appeals, with its skittish opening and minor key immediately reflecting the mixed feelings of the title . The interest is maintained through the contrasting motifs and a good use of part writing which gives light and air to the texture. There is enough independence in the parts to give personal freedom but also some block accompaniment passages that add strength. If you have four good players this one is not to be missed!
