Also available: Appalachian Suite; 3 Korean Folk Songs
Kelly Via has set these three different types of folk music very successfully. By Kells Waters is a simple but effective piece in one movement with straightforward rhythms and textures. The 3 Korean Folk Songs have more independence of line and more rhythmic variety within each movement and there is the option to add a harp or piano. Appalachain Suite in 4 movements contains some beautiful melodies that have been skilfully arranged. Again the rhythms are simple but some strong finger work is needed in 'Fiddle Tunes' which includes a Wild Goose Chase. These three pieces are well suited to those who are put off by a myriad of sharps or flats, and prove that flute choir music doesn't have to be complex to work well.
In this florid setting of a quiet and haunting Celtic folk tune in the Dorian mode, this melody is first featured in the bass flute, followed with many lyrical lines shared throughout the ensemble. An excellent piece for a meditative moment on your programme as well as for developing ensemble blend, tone and balance.
