You won't go home singing the tune having played this piece but you may have been beguiled by the atmospheric writing. There is plenty of interplay between the parts and the ranges of the various flutes have been used effectively. The inclusion of the now fashionable but sadly mostly unaffordable contrabass flute does add extra depth to the texture, so for a successful perfomance that part would really need to be taken over by another bass instrument. Definitely worth the effort though.
An "ikebana" is meant to be a poem told by flowers, and takes form in the shape of lovely, meticulously placed flower arrangements. Gary Schocker has written a dreamy, beautiful piece about the ikebana, commissioned by the Arizona Flute Society. For advanced players.
