This is an arrangement of ‘Général Lavine – Eccentric’ from the second book of Préludes for Piano. It is written in a cake-walk style and depicts the American clown Edward Lavine, who appeared in the Marigny Theatre in Paris in 1910. This music reflects the humour of the character depicted, but also the pathos of the clown is conveyed through the varying musical styles and rhythmic contrasts. (Grade 7-8)
