Girolamo Deraco and the Etymos Ensemble commissioned the work. The first three performances took place in December 2016 (Lucca and Florence).
There were three key elements at work in the process. The first was a visual starting point, a painting by Anselm Kiefer; the second to derive rhythms from the poetry of Paul Celan and the third utilised pitch patterns in German 'kindergarten' songs.
