English composer Edward Elgar’s premise for his "Variation on an Original Theme" was to musically characterize a dozen of his friends and associates. Each variation is designated by the initials or pseudonym of the person portrayed (hence the enigma). This version includes two of the most lovely variations. It is scored for 2 piccolos, 4 C flutes, 2 altos and bass.
