This lovely piece is based loosely around 'Yesterday' and takes the form of a rhapsody. The writing lies mainly in the most expressive part of the alto register, the technical challenges are modest and there is just enough of the original to bring about that familiar nostalgic feeling. This is essentially a homage to an eternally popular song and wonderful in its own right!
Commissioned by flutist, Wendy Stern, "The Day Before" brings back memories of yesterdays. Starting with a reflection of Beethoven, the work is melodic and thoughful, with flickers of memories past including the Beatles "Yesterday".
