This is a lovely piece which really does sound like dolls dancing! It's gentle all the way through and the writing makes the most of the strengths of each instrument. The flute takes the main part supported by a flowing piano accompaniment and colourful interjections from the piccolo. Each player has a chance to shine too which adds to the colouring. The repetitive nature of the dance theme makes the whole piece really work its fairy-like magic as the dolls almost seem to float. Well within the scope of three good students, this would make a great end-of-year concert winner.
