This piece was composed, in the 1950s, as music for « Entre ciel et terre » [“Between Heaven and Earth”] a film about Israel, evoking the atmosphere of the sacred places. The composer’s inspiration springs from what he himself called “earlier horizons,” which, no doubt, explains the more than usually traditional musical language used (though not without some individual touches in the cantata). The distinguished success of this film music encouraged the composer to turn it into a free standing work.
