This is a beautiful, if rather unusual, adaptation of a Holst's well-loved Christmas carol. Nicole Chamberlain and extended techniques are inseparable and she really know how to use them. Here the simple use of wind sounds at the start and end of the piece really enhance the melancholy character of the melody. The middle section sounds like a free improvisation as it meanders through the registers, creating a piece of haunting charm. This would sound lovely everywhere and extra-wonderful in the resonant acoustics of a church. Definitely a carol with a difference - Holst would love it!
