“Poignant Australian music”
This lovely three movement piece is set in one of the hardest hit areas of the 2019 Australian bushfires and it is very evocative of the Blue Mountains landscape. Horseshoe Falls is beautifully lyrical with sweeps of melody across the instrument. Blue Gum Falls is more improvisatory with a 'mesto' performance direction and Govett's Leap, although in a fast 12/16, is still unsettled. The ending raises questions rather than answers. This a beautiful and playable piece for solo flute - try it now!
Blackheath for Solo Flute by Australian composer Fran Griffin. In the Blue Mountains National Park in New South Wales, Australia, is the town of Blackheath, a gateway to wonderful scenery and bushwalking. Composed in three movements: Horseshoe Falls, Blue Gum Forest, and Govett's Leap.
