Based on a poem by Karl Beck that dreams of 'what might have been', this heartbreaking, beautiful song was composed and dedicated to Marie Garben in 1853, the year in which a misunderstanding occurred that ended the composer's hopes of marrying her. Each player has a part that is fully involved in expressing the music. The flute parts vary in difficulty, with the 3rd flute part being for suitable for a less confident player.
