This arrangement can be performed effectively with as few as six players as it was originally cast for 4 concert flutes, alto and bass. The piccolo and contrabass parts were added later and are optional. However, when these instruments are available these parts are highly recommended as they fill out the frequency range and give the piece more depth and richness. In large flute ensembles with multiple flutists on each part it is suggested that a few more players be assigned on the 1st flute part so that the lead melody is clear. In large groups the piccolo should be doubled as well.
