This is a great choice of piece to arrange for a larger group of flutes and clarinets as its texture lends itself so well to the dovetailing of both sets of instruments. Threre's plenty of variety in the form too, with changes of tempo that will need to be safely negotiated. Rhythmically fairly straightforward, the real challenge is for the B flat clarinets who play the opening section B major. Overall though this a great arrangement. You can always trust Mel Orriss!
Butterworth based The Banks of Green Willow on two folk song melodies that he noted in 1907 - "The Banks of Green Willow" and "Green Bushes". This lush textured Idyll is set here for the mellow timbres of flutes and clarinets.
