This is a beautiful piece! Made up almost entirely of downward scale-like patterns there is a restful, even meditative quality to the writing. Sometimes simple is best!
Arioso is one of the fundamental elements of opera and represents an intermediate form between aria and recitative. Paweł Łukaszewski’s Arioso refers to the glorious tradition of the Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach, who in his output introduced ariosos in the closing section of recitatives.
Lukaszewski’s work is characterised by a natural musical language and an expressively-charged melodic line. He deliberately gives a vocal treatment to the flute part, while the organ part prompts the performer to make changes of manual. The musical idea repeated in both parts encourages the duet to experiment with tone colour.
