This is a very creative piece of writing from Stacy Garrop who uses instrumental colour to bring her ideas to life. 'Michael' uses trills to great effect, 'Raphael' is about ethereal melody and 'Gabriel' is a virtuoso workout for all players. There is no doubt that this is a challenging work although each movement could stand alone, especially Rapheal which is beautiful and atmospheric - a good contrast in a busy recital. Good players will have a great time performing this so it's ideal for colleges as well as individuals. It certainly highlights the ability of three flutes to stretch the imagination and that's a wonderful thing!
