This piece uses three traditional songs either written or used by Robert Burns. The first, 'O Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad' captures the youthful excitement of a secret flirtation; play lightly, but with good attention to the suddenly changing dynamics. The second, is 'My Love Like a Red, Red Rose' features a solo quartet verse, and should be played simply, until the more expressive section at Letter I. The final song is the somewhat maniacally triumphant 'I Ha'e a Wife o' My Ain' which races by in a fugal style. It is worth having a look at the terxts of the original poems for more insight
