“Expressive Kohler”
This book of lovely studies is probably Kohler's most expressive and a look down the contents page will reveal just how much variety there is here. There are the usual ones for technique of course, but most have appealing titles that require a more imaginative input. Playing The Swing really does fell like you are using the playground swing with its increasingly rapid alteration of notes and rising and falling arpeggios. Doll's Waltz, slow and elegant, is totally charming but again challenges those leaps from high to low which should sound effortless. The Torture of Tantalus is a finger twister and Adieu has its heart on its sleeve! My favourite is Insect's Dance with its quirky rhythms and biting grace notes. If you only want to have one book of Kohler studies on your shelf make sure it's this one!
