Franz Behr was a German composer best known for his salon pieces. The sparse information about him reveals only that he was born in 1837 and died in 1898. His oeuvre comprises at least 582 compositions, almost all of which have been forgotten. His Opus 303, a polka that was one of the favorite pieces of Sergej Rachmaninoff's father Wassily and was later listed as Sergej's composition, is still known today. Only towards the end of the 20th century was Behr recognized as the author of the piece.
