“Neglected Trios”
Richard Muller-Dombois has compiled four very good books of trios for his 'Art of Ensemble Playing' series. All his work is extremely good and for this last book he has transcribed '10 Instrumentalsatze und Chore'. This is a much more challenging proposition than the earlier volumes with phrasing and articulation requiring greater skills and the ensemble being more complex. Perhaps the most interesting of the pieces is an arrangement of Dance of the Blessed Spirits (Gluck), which really helps the understanding of both the rhythmic structure and the nature of the accompaniment. Chopin's 'Raindrop Prelude' is in D flat major and Debussy's 'Le petit negre' will need sparkly articulation. Altogether this is a valuable volume of trios which justifies the cost!
